Complete How to Fish walkthrough for all five islands: the Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, bird fight and the volcano whale, with every NPC hand-in.
How to Fish Walkthrough: Every Island, Boss and Quest
Dazed Games' How to Fish dumped more than a quarter of a million concurrent players onto its five islands within three days of launch, and a large chunk of them are stuck on the same handful of gates: the boat that will not unlock, the coordinates that lead nowhere, and the boss trophy they sold for pocket change. This walkthrough walks the full route from your first clam to the final volcano encounter — including every NPC hand-in that actually moves the story, because killing bosses alone does not.
Official source: How to Fish launched on Steam on August 20, 2026 and peaked above 260,000 concurrent players within days (ghacks report); grab the game on the official Steam store page.
The Loop That Drives Everything

Before the island-by-island route, internalize the loop, because the whole game is variations on it:
- Catch something with a rod and lure
- Kill it — fists, knife, or increasingly ridiculous firearms
- Increase its value — trick shots multiply kill value, cooking multiplies it again
- Sell at the local buyer
- Buy better rods, bait, weapons and boat parts
- Hand in boss trophies to the right NPC
- Sail to the next island
The step most new players skip is six. Ordinary fish are vendor trash; anything with a proper noun attached — shells, tails, heads, skeletons — is a quest object until an NPC confirms otherwise. Sell those too early and progression stalls with no error message.
Never sell a uniquely named drop until you have handed it to the NPC who asked for it. The chain breaks silently if you do, and re-farming a boss is far more expensive than holding one item.
Lighthouse Island: Your First Hour
You wash up at the Lighthouse with empty pockets. The route:
- Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper — he teaches the basics and takes hand-ins.
- Eat a clam, then throw clams to the keeper using the cue button. He pays cash for them.
- Buy the Basic Fishing Rod for $3. It is deliberately terrible. That is fine.
- Catch shallow-water species with the free lure and kill them by hand. Small catches die to fists without much drama.
- Buy a knife when you can afford it, then sharpen it on the anvil by the lighthouse door — first sharpen $14, second $28, third $36, taking damage up to 20.
- Switch to Hotdog Lures ($1 each) for bigger catches. More money per kill, still no gun needed.
The Spider Crab: First Boss, Boat Keys
The keeper eventually hands you a Beer Can. Feed it back to him, take the empty can, and use it as a lure — that summons the Spider Crab, your first boss.
The fight teaches the pattern every later boss follows:
- Bait the charge attack, sidestep at the last moment
- The crab stuns itself when it misses — punish with two to four hits (three is comfortable)
- Watch the white bar under the boss health pool: if it empties, the boss escapes and you redo the summon
For the record, the crab is soft: 750 HP — three sharpened-knife cycles (damage 16→22 across the $14/$28/$36 sharpening path) finish it without ever buying a gun.
Kill it, then bring the reward to the Lighthouse Keeper. He gives you the boat keys — your ticket off island one. Per Destructoid's full walkthrough, feeding the crab's meat to the keeper completes the first quest directly.
Island 2 (Forest): Leeches and the Giant Piranha
The Forest introduces leeches, denser vegetation, and the first fight where melee stops being viable. Guns unlock here:
| Weapon | Cost | Base Damage | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pistol | $50 | 25 | Skippable — a third of the shotgun's price, a fraction of its output |
| Shotgun | $150 | 3 per pellet | The purchase that changes the run |
| SMG | $650 | 24 | Island 3 shop — fits a compensator or suppressor before boss fights |
Buy the Shotgun ($150) and the Giant Piranha becomes straightforward instead of a war of attrition. Its drop is what matters: the piranha's trophy item is what unlocks the Island 3 coordinates. Hand it in where the quest points you, buy the Radar ($10) if you somehow have not yet, and sail on.
Island 3 (Desert): Tropical Chaos and the Pufferfish
The Desert shifts to tropical waters and heavier creatures. The SMG earns its keep here, especially with a recoil attachment fitted — bare, it sprays everywhere. The island's boss is the Pufferfish, and its tail is the hand-in that opens Island 4.
This is also where cooking starts mattering for your wallet: cooked catches outsell raw ones consistently enough that the cooking station pays for itself across an island's stay.
Island 4 (Rocks): The Bird Fight
Island four swaps sea monsters for airspace. The bird combat encounter is where the Sniper Rifle comes into its own — precision damage plus the largest trick-shot multipliers in the game. The bird's head is the trophy, and it buys you the Volcano radar coordinates.
Trick shots are worth practicing here even if you ignore them earlier: mid-air kills and multi-kills stack value multipliers on everything you sell afterward.
Island 5 (Military Volcano): The Final Whale
The endgame island is military-themed and hostile. The finale is the giant whale — community guides variously call it the lava whale, magma whale or Mutated Bowhead Whale; it is the same encounter, and the biggest health pool in the game at 38,000 HP with a 36-damage contact hit. Bring the Assault Rifle ($20,000) fully fitted with attachments — this is the one fight where skipping upgrades hurts.
Every Story Boss: Exact HP and Contact Damage
Data mined directly from the game files, so you can budget ammo before each summon:
| Boss | Island | HP | Contact Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab | Lighthouse | 750 | — |
| Giant Piranha | Forest | 2,500 | 32 |
| Pufferfish | Desert | 18,000 | 34 |
| Mutated Bowhead Whale | Volcano | 38,000 | 36 |
Read that table as an ammo budget: a base shotgun pellet (3 damage) would need over 12,600 hits on the whale, the assault rifle's stock 40-damage round cuts that to 950, and its fully upgraded 100-damage round to 380.
The sequence per Kosgames' island guide: sail in using the radar coordinates from the bird head, fight the whale, and finish the story by delivering the whale into the volcano itself.
Speedrunners can reach this point in roughly an hour for the associated achievement, but a first playthrough that skips side content misses most of the Fishipedia and the best money loops. For a fuller breakdown of each fight's mechanics, see our How to Fish boss guide.
FAQ

How long is How to Fish?
A focused run reaches the credits in a few hours — the one-hour final-boss achievement proves how fast it can go — but 100% completion with all islands, quests and the Fishipedia runs considerably longer.
Can I do the islands out of order?
No. Each island unlocks through the previous one's boss trophy hand-in, so the chain Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano is fixed.
What do I do if progression stopped?
Check your inventory for an un-handed-in boss trophy. Nine times out of ten the game is waiting on an item you already own.
Do I need guns to finish the game?
Technically the early game is melee-viable, but from the Giant Piranha onward firearms are the practical path — the Shotgun at Island 2 is the minimum comfortable loadout.
